Sleep trackers have quietly become the most-worn health device category, and also the most misunderstood. The devices are genuinely good at some things and close to guessing at others — knowing which is which changes how much weight you should put on the number you see each morning.

What the hardware can actually measure

Almost every consumer tracker combines an accelerometer with an optical heart-rate sensor, sometimes adding skin temperature and blood-oxygen estimation. From those raw signals it infers everything else. Movement and heart rate are measured directly and reliably. Sleep stages are not measured at all — they are estimated by an algorithm from those inputs.

The honest summary: trust your tracker on when you slept and how disturbed the night was. Treat the deep-versus-REM breakdown as a rough indicator, not a clinical reading.

Where accuracy holds up — and where it slips

Ring, watch or mat?

Form factor matters more than spec sheets suggest, because the best tracker is the one you tolerate wearing every night.

  • Rings are the most comfortable for sleep and give steady contact at the finger, but they cannot show you much on their own and need charging around a shower routine.
  • Watches do far more during the day and usually cost less for the same sleep features, but many people find them uncomfortable overnight and the fit loosens as you move.
  • Under-mattress mats require nothing to be worn at all, which solves compliance entirely. They struggle with shared beds and pets, and they cannot follow you when you travel.

Watch the trend, ignore the score

The single-number nightly score is the least useful thing most apps display. It compresses several weakly-measured inputs into one figure that feels precise and is not. A seven-day rolling average of total sleep time and resting heart rate tells you far more, and it is far less likely to send you chasing a bad night that was actually a sensor artefact.

There is also a documented downside to over-monitoring: anxiety about sleep scores can itself worsen sleep. If you find yourself checking the app before you have got out of bed, that is a reason to turn the notifications off, not to buy a better device.

Who should skip one

If you already sleep well, a tracker will mostly give you something new to worry about. They earn their keep when you are troubleshooting — testing whether a later caffeine cut-off, a cooler room or a fixed wake time actually moves the numbers. Once you have your answer, the device has done its job.
