Robot vacuum marketing has settled on suction power as the headline number, which is convenient for brands because it is easy to increase and easy to print. It is also close to the least useful spec for predicting whether the thing will actually keep your floors clean.
Navigation beats suction, every time
A 2,000Pa robot with lidar mapping will clean a house better than a 6,000Pa robot bouncing around at random, for a simple reason: coverage. The high-suction unit cannot clean what it never drives over, and random-pattern navigation routinely misses whole sections of a floor while re-cleaning others four times.
Look for lidar or camera-based mapping with saved multi-floor maps and no-go zones. That combination is what turns the machine from a novelty into an appliance you stop thinking about.
The spec that matters most: whether the robot builds and remembers a map. Everything else — suction, mopping, self-emptying — is secondary to it covering the whole floor reliably.
Brush design decides how it copes with hair
If anyone in the household has long hair, or you own a shedding pet, brush design will determine whether you spend five minutes a week cutting tangles off a roller with scissors. Rubber or silicone anti-tangle brushes handle hair far better than bristle rollers. Dual counter-rotating brushes are better again. This is worth more to daily life than any suction figure.

The running costs nobody advertises
Filters, side brushes, main brushes and mop pads are all consumables. Budget for a modest annual spend on replacements, and — more importantly — check that parts for your chosen model are actually sold separately and in stock. A discontinued parts line is what usually kills a robot vacuum, not a failed motor.
Batteries are the other clock. Expect meaningful capacity loss after roughly three to four years of near-daily cycles. Models with user-replaceable batteries are worth seeking out and increasingly rare.

A robot vacuum is a maintenance tool, not a replacement for a deep clean. Run daily, it keeps dust and crumbs from ever building up, which is genuinely valuable. It will not get the edges of a stair carpet or clean under a low sofa it cannot fit beneath. Buy it to reduce how often you need the upright, not to retire it.
